Overview & Responsibilities

The Benefits Director can help transform SCI into an employer of choice when he or she provides leadership for—

  • Improvements to benefits plan design that results in optimal plan performance;

  • Developing benefits plans that provides health and wellness management solutions;

  • Retirement benefits that help employees to consider the appropriate retirement age, savings rate, and income distribution solution to achieve a comfortable retirement for their specific situation; and,

  • Employees to invest in retirement benefits through communication vehicles as well as education and advice tools, automated retirement plan service features, and diversified investment opportunities.

Key duties and areas of responsibility include

  • Providing leadership to healthcare strategy development with an initial focus on medical and wellness for a diverse workforce

  • Building a benefits competency suitable for a “powerhouse in employee benefits”

  • Developing, implementing and periodically refreshing the retirement and savings strategy

  • Providing governance, financial management and vendor and program management (including market reviews and analysis of industry trends) for US ERISA retirement and savings plans

  • Being well-versed in retirement planning advice products and the employee population in order to bring a full spectrum of features or functionality to retirement benefits plans/services

  • Assisting in benchmarking discussions including strategy evolution as a result of benchmarking data

  • Facilitating ongoing requirements definitions that includes employee and executive data gathering

  • Participating in benefits plans analysis discussions to ensure provision requirements match technical specifications

  • Leading in the provision of medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug plan performance management and assessments

  • Reviewing employee contributions rate development

  • Developing models to evaluate cost savings scenarios for benefits plans

  • Soliciting actuarial review where appropriate

  • Overseeing the negotiations and management of vendor contracts, Service Line Agreements and relationships for contracted health and welfare services and retirement services to increase vendor value and performance

  • Ensuring the integration of Retirement and Health and Welfare benefits strategies, policies, and governance

  • Providing holistic health management solutions

  • Providing annual benefits budgeting creation, funding analyses, and options

  • Providing assurance that benefits programs are in compliance with legislation

  • Maintaining awareness of current industry environment that shapes opportunities for benefits solutions

  • Seeking and providing peer and customer reviews to ensure high quality deliverables that enhance total rewards strategies

  • Mentoring and delegating work

  • Leading multi-disciplinary teams to deliver overall integrated customer solutions for seamless customer experience

  • Building and structuring benefits team to ensure maximum performance

  • Providing purpose, direction and motivation to team

  • Leading staff in improving and automating business processes for benefits plans design and administration

Requirements & Qualifications

  • BS degree in Human Resources or Business Administration

  • CEBs Certification Preferred

  • A minimum of 8 years of demonstrated success in developing and implementing benefits plans with “hands-on” knowledge of health and welfare and retirement benefits plans design, funding, pricing, implementation, and administration of a full array of benefits programs

  • Familiarity with benefits plans cutting edge tools and resources

  • Expertise in performing competitive benchmarking analysis of benefits plan designs, preparing savings/cost projections and financial modeling of plan design alternatives, and preparing of financial budget projections including rate development

  • Ideally grounded in healthcare consulting, brokerage firm, or group health actuarial function

  • Additional experience with life/disability plans desired

  • Ongoing experience measuring, monitoring and reporting on benefits plans

  • Fundamental understanding of true costs of various benefits programs and return on investment

  • Strong excel skills

  • A problem solver, able to identify and solve challenging problems and increase efficiencies within teams

  • Analytical; able to draw conclusions from data in a logical, systematic way

  • Results-driven; focused on achieving results that promote business success

  • Communication; displays strong oral, written and public speaking skills

  • Communication strategy planning expertise for the roll-out of benefits programs

  • Vendor engagement and enrollment coordination experience that includes vendor contract/compliance review and vendor plan change implementation management

  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams through both formal and informal reporting relationships

  • Creativity, energy, confidence, integrity and a positive attitude towards all aspects of the job
